Electric Cars

Nissan Leaf

“Wwwooooossshhhhhh”

If you haven’t already read my other blogs, I suggest that you do because I can guarantee that they will be more interesting than this one!

Anyway let’s dive into the dull depths of the electric automotive society. No offence. You’re probably thinking, ‘who does this guy think he is? With all the environmental precautions being put in place, electric cars are the future and they should be embracing it, not talking it down.’. I for one, completely agree. Electric cars are great, and they are the future. But let me ask you this. How do you fuel your electric car? With electricity, right? I know, I know bear with me here I am going somewhere with it. And that electricity that you’re using to power your electric vehicle, where do you think it’s coming from? To this day I can guarantee that more than 60 per cent of that electricity is from fossil fuels, which in turn is going against what electric cars are all about. Being sustainable of course.

To me, the way that electric cars have been introduced is wrong. The infrastructure for them is not in place yet.

Firstly, the charging points. If you’re going on a long journey I can assure you that you will be stressing about where you are next going to be charging up your car. Then you have to hang around for hours before it’s charged. Yes, I know that charging the batteries in these cars is getting faster, but the quicker you charge the battery to more likely it is to deteriorate faster, thus giving you less driving range.

Secondly, in my opinion, I don’t think electric cars should have been introduced to the market, until the electricity provided for charging is 100 per cent renewable energy. As the electric car is to prevent the use of fossil fuels and emitting harmful gases. So, if less than 40 per cent of electricity provided for charging your electric vehicle is renewable, that means that you should only charge your electric vehicle to less than 40 per cent of its battery before setting off. That way you can truly say you’re saving the environment.

I’m not against electric cars and I do think they are a good idea. I just think they are 50 years too early. There are a couple electric cars I would buy to this day. But, they are over 2 million pounds and they are hyper-electric cars. Not realistic. For the likes of the other electric cars they just don’t do anything for me.  I bet none of you reading this (well those of you that are still reading of course) can honestly say to me that you would much rather be driving a Nissan leaf, over a 700bhp V8 Hellcat. Can you? No! I didn’t think so. Anyhow, as you can see I will most passionately be talking about electric cars on this section of the blog, and hopefully we can find some bearable ones along the way.

Super/Sports Cars

Lamborghini Aventador

“Once upon a time”

Super/Sports cars. There once was a time when these cars were the kings of the road. When supercars were the best and fastest cars that you could buy, and sports cars were second in line. Oh, how things have changed!

In the motoring world we live today, things have turned upside down in the chain of command and we are seeing all kinds of ridiculousness. That said, you can now buy a family saloon car with the same power as that in a supercar and is just as fast as a supercar whilst being more practical. No brainer! You go for the family saloon being more practical and you save yourself around 100K. Bargain!

It’s a shame to think that these once legendary cars are struggling to find a place in todays motoring society. Even hatchbacks are starting to gain on the supercars! Nevertheless, Supercars and sports cars are still being made and there are some good ones too. For instance, the return of the Supra, or not so supra should I say? Moving swiftly on before I start any arguments we also have the Aston Martin Vantage, Ferrari Roma, Huracan in the supercar category. In the Sports cars we have the M2 Comp, GT86, Fiat 124, Mazda MX5…. The list goes on and on.

Now, you’re probably wondering what determines the difference between a ‘supercar’ and a ‘Sportscar’. Well a sports car is considered as, ‘a low-built car designed for performance at high speeds, often having a roof that can be folded back’. This is true, a sports car in my opinion, is typically a car that has good handling, looks sporty and usually has less than a six-figure price tag. A supercar is defined online as, ‘A high-performance sports car’. So, as you can see the two types of cars go hand in hand. Give your sports car a boost of POWER and stick a zero on the end of the price tag and you have a supercar, right?

Theoretically yes, in reality no. This is a subject where differentiating between the two types of car has always been a mystery. In this section of the blog, hopefully, some clarity can be shed on the matter, and those of you that are still reading by this point, will be able to identify the difference between these two types of automobiles.

Off Roaders

Toyota Land Cruiser

“Let’s get muddy!”

If you have been scrolling down the website and been seeing all the super cars, and hyper cars, and hot hatch articles, and you have been thinking, “this guy is like all the other car journalists and only writes about the posh boy stuff.” Think again! This section of the site is for you off road junkies. For those that love vehicles that can go anywhere and do anything. For those that love crawling up rocky inclines, trawling through deep water, towing and rescuing and, most importantly, getting muddy!

So, there you have it, as far as intros go, if I haven’t grabbed the interests of you Off-roaders then I’m not sure how else I can. When people think off-road, they immediately go straight for a land rover and nothing else is as good. Well, yes land rovers are good off road and they have been in the business of off roading for a long time. But, there is always a but, I wouldn’t necessarily agree that they are the best. There is so much choice of off-road cars now and some of them are just as good if not better than land rovers off roaders.

“What are these many choices of off-road cars you speak off?” Well, you have your standard SUV off-roaders, you can get pick-ups, mini off roaders, off-highway vehicles, utility-terrain vehicles and rock crawlers. Now, some of you are probably thinking, “I don’t know some of those kinds of vehicles”, not to worry, I will be covering all aspects of off-roading here and all the vehicles that fall within off-roading.

So, for those of you that love getting muddy! Having wheels in the air! Going down deep descents! Crawling up steep ascents! Dashing through water! Or just being an utter lunatic off-road then this is the place for you!

Just reading that paragraph got me excited about this section of the website and I’m not the biggest of off-roaders. I guess you really will have to buckle up and hold on tight as it’s going to be a bumpy ride as we dive into the depths of the off-roading monsters on the market.

Hatchbacks

Mercedes A45S

“It is BONKERS!”

Well well well, what have we here? A small little hatchback body with some sophisticated engineering and, of course, a boot full of POWER! This is an equation for endless amounts of fun and bundles of joy!

Hot hatchbacks, if you didn’t know already, are getting hotter! Some of these hot hatches are so hot that they are pulling figures that are close to supercars. Take the new Mercedes A45S, that will do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. That is quicker than a Porsche 911 that takes 4 seconds, and it is quicker than an Audi RS5. It is BONKERS!

Personally, for me if you want the most fun in a car, you can have it in these overpowered little rockets. But, it’s not just the power that comes in these things. A lot of these little cars are entering the territories of supercars, when it comes to the engineering sides of things too. With things like active roll bars, clever adaptive suspension, limited slip differentials and huge brakes.

But, unless you don’t know your cars, which if you’re reading this article you probably do, then if you saw one of these on the road you probably wouldn’t think they are any different from the standard car. Until you put your foot down of course. These things are becoming more and more popular and car manufacturers are making them better and better. There are so many different hot hatches on the market now that you can buy. But, hopefully what this section of the blog will do is give you an insight into each of them. And if you’re in the market for buying one, then hopefully it may also help you decide which one to go for.

At the end of the day though, you cannot go wrong with a hot hatch. It is everything you will ever need in a car. They’re practical with a decent sized boot and enough space to carry 4-5 people. They are good for motorway driving, driving on twisty roads, good around town, parking is easy because they are so small and if you want to drive it properly then they are also great fun on the track.

So, stay tuned for future content on these marvellous little things and find out what is good and bad about the different hot hatches you can buy. Lastly, if there are any particular hot hatches, or any other cars for that matter, that you want me to write about then send me an email or comment below.

918 Porsche

918 Porsche

“In another league”

Welcome to the first Hyper-Hybrid, Straight-line review. Where we get straight to the good stuff that really matters, on the ludicrous numbers that these cars produce.

This week on the cards we have something very special! This week we will be looking at the 918 Porsche. Now, those of you that consider yourselves petrol heads, will know that this is one of the cars that make up the ‘Holy Trinity’. Those of you that don’t know what the ‘Holt Trinity’ is. It is the battle between Ferrari, with the LAFerrari, McLaren, with the P1 and Porsche, with the 918 to gain status for the best Hyper-hybrid car ever made. I have heard from many reviews that they are all great and they all have very different things that are very much likeable. But, it is very hard to decide which is best. I will be writing an article on all three in the near future that you can read, if you wish to find out which I think is best.

Straightlining to the figures, the Porsche 918 has a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 600bhp. ‘Seems like a supercar then?’ Nope, this is then supplemented by an electric motor at each wheel that produces another 275bhp. (That’s more than my car! And that’s only from its electric motors) This gives a combined bhp, when in full attack mode of 875bhp! POWERRRRRRR! This power working in line with the 7-speed-dual-clutch PDK gearbox, electronic limited slip differential and four-wheel drive, means the 918 can accelerate for 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds. Absolute MADNESS!

If for some weird reason you want to tone down the ‘MADNESS’, then there is the option to put the 918 into complete electric drive and just drive around town on the 275bhp from the electric motors. This will silently get you to 60mph in 6.6 seconds. The only downside with this is that you can only drive 18 miles just using the electric motors and you can drive up to 93mph on electric power before the roaring V8 kicks in. How civilised.

On a whole, I think this car is in another league and with a price tag when new of £850,000 I should hope it’s in another league. Although the price of this car is increasing, and you would be lucky to find one of these for under £1,000,000 I would still love to own one. The design of it is incredible, the performance it produces is bonkers, and the technology it has is phenomenal. Please Porsche give me one!

Hyper Hybrids

Koenigsegg Regera

“Hyper-hybrid Clouds?”

Those of you that have already read my blog on Hyper cars will have found out how ludicrous Hyper cars are becoming and if you haven’t already noticed, from the hyper-cars blog, I have an obsession with pure POWER! If you haven’t read that yet I suggest you do before we kick off this one on hyper-hybrids.

Done that? Good, let’s get started.

So, we now know that hyper-cars are ludicrous and there is no other word for it. Well hyper-hybrids, on the other hand, are preposterously ludicrous. Now for those of you that don’t know what a hyper-hybrid is, you are probably thinking, “What on earth is this guy going on about!? Why would you compare an economical car with a hypercar?” well stick with me till the end and you will clearly see what I’m going on about.

What is a Hyper-Hybrid? You’re probably thinking. Well online it is said that, “A hyper-hybrid cloud is a complex distributed environment involving multiple and diverse interconnec…” Sorry wrong definition, it’s most likely that I have thoroughly confused you now. The actual definition of an automobile hyper-hybrid is, ah well you can’t actually find a definition for it online, but they do exist. Basically, they are like a normal hybrid car with a combustion engine and electric motors. However, what makes them different and ‘Hyper’, from a regular hybrid car, is that the combustion engine and electric motors work in union with one another to produce, that’s right you guessed it, MORE POWER!!

The electric motors provide the car with the instant acceleration you see in the renowned Tesla, before the combustion engine brings in the big guns and propels the car into orbit.  Ok, I’ll admit that’s a slight exaggeration, but if I was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of one of these monsters, I’d imagine it would feel pretty similar.

So, like the Hyper-car page, that I assume you have read by now? You can expect to see content here on the different Hyper-Hybrid cars on the market. And I can tell you now, if I had the dosh, I most certainly would own one of these. Question is, Which Hyper-Hybrid car would I own? Well I guess you will just have to stay tuned and I will keep you posted on the answer to that question, as I will be expressing my opinions, viewpoints and verdicts on the very latest and best Hyper-Hybrid cars money can buy.

If you enjoyed reading this Blog or any of them for that matter and you would like to see more content, feel free to send an email, leave a comment or follow my Instagram account to let me know what you like and would like to see more of. SSC Tuatara

SSC Tuatara

“0.279”

Welcome to the first Hyper car, Straight-line review. Where we will cut through all the waffle and get to the good stuff on the ludicrous numbers that these cars produce. So, let’s get into it.

“Who is SSC?” You’re probably wondering. Well SSC, stands for Shelby Supercars. They are a North American car company, set out to design and manufacture American supercars that will stand up against the European dominated industry of high-performance production cars. Anyway, there’s your history lesson now onto the car before I bore you to death.

0.279µ. Any ideas as to what that figure is for? Those of you that know physics might know that this is indeed the drag coefficient of the SSC Tuatara. Why is this important? Why not start with the POWER? Well, this car is set out to compete with the likes of Bugatti and Hennessy in the race to 300mph. Yes, Bugatti have hit 300mph, but they didn’t run in both directions and take an average. So, to me, it doesn’t count. The reason why the drag coefficient is so important, is because at that kind of speed, in a car there is an immense amount of force pushed against the windscreen by the air. Comparing drag coefficients with the Tuatara and the Chiron. 0.279 and 0.35, respectively. Now 0.07 might not seem a lot, but the highest drag coefficient is 1, which would mean, in a perfect physics world, your car wouldn’t move.  So, a 7% decrease in drag at these speeds is immense. This also means that the cars stability remains the same from 100mph all the way to 300mph up.

I have always thought that the cars SSC make are faster than Bugatti. SSC originally held the world record for fastest production car, with the ultimate aero and a top speed of 258mph. And, guess what? I think they are going to do it again with the Tuatara.

Diving into the figures. POWER! 1750bhp when run on E85, an ethanol fuel, and 1350bhp on 91 octane fuel. 0-60? Well, SSC claims it’ll do that in under 2.5 seconds and the standing quarter in under 9.75 seconds and top speed… still to find out. Made entirely from carbon fibre, this thing is light, less than 1250kg light, that’s lighter than a VW Golf and this thing has almost 1800hp!! I think this isn’t just going to do 300mph, I think it’s going to make mince meat of that figure.

The only thing it comes down to, as mentioned in my previous Hyper car blog, is the tyres they use on the car. Will the tyres they use be able to withstand the temperatures at 300mph and will they be able to supply the grip it needs? SSC have done the work. It’s now down to the tyre manufacturers.

Hypercars

Venom F5

Ok, things are getting silly now!

Do you agree? There is a point where a car has too much power, Yes or No? Simple question huh?

Hmmn I think not. It’s questions like this that seem simple on the outside but as soon as you dive deeper into them you end up finding all kinds of mind-boggling sorcery that not even the genii of genius’ can figure it out! I think I confused myself there!

Anyway, let’s get to it. On this page of the blog you will be seeing posts about all the different hyper-cars that are out there on the market to buy. And I can assure you there are quite a few.

Firstly, what is a “Hyper” Car? Well if you type the question into google it comes back with, ‘This vehicle would have ultra-light construction with an aerodynamic body using advanced composite materials and low-drag design.’ (Wikipedia) That’s all well and good and it’s not technically wrong it’s just missing one thing that I would consider the major playing card! POWER!!!!! And a lot of it too. For me if a so called “Hyper-car” hasn’t got more than 1000HP is it even a “Hyper-car”? I think not. And near enough all the hyper-cars out there have over this figure in raw POWER!! If you hadn’t noticed I like that word, sorry I just can’t help myself sometimes.

But, back to the question at hand. Is there a point where a car has too much power? Personally, I think there is. Think about it. What do you have in a car? Engine, check. Chassis, check. Body, check. And most importantly Tyres, check. Ok, I’ll admit I’m missing a few bits, but they are the main bits that you just can’t do without. However, when all is said and done, if you don’t have good tyres with a car that has the kind of power a hyper-car has, you simply won’t go anywhere. All that’s going to happen is you will light up the driving wheels and won’t be able to see where your going as you will have created a massive cloud of smoke and then when you come out of it you will crash because you will be going so fast that you won’t be able to react to what’s at the end of the cloud. Getting side-tracked AGAIN! SORRY!

Anyway, there is a point now where the tyre manufacturers simply cannot make tyres wide enough, grippy enough or durable enough to withstand the raw POWER being developed in these cars. It’s ludicrous. Trying to get all that power through 4 small bits of rubber, simply ludicrous. I’ve decided no other word can describe these kinds of cars, but boy are they cool.

If I had the money to buy one, would I? well I guess you will just have to buckle up, sit tight and enjoy the ride, as I will be expressing my opinions, view points and verdicts on the very latest and best Hyper-cars money can buy.
